What is this all about?

An eclectic selection of the best Latin and Tropical music: Salsa of all styles (NY, LA, Cuban), with a touch of Merenge and Reggaeton for the party feel, and a larger proportion of Bachata and Kizomba than usual for the chillout factor.
All selected and played by a dream team of expert DJs and musicians: DJ Vish, DJ Sacha, musician Nick Duffield and guest DJs will deliver an impeccable mix of old-style favourites and cutting edge trendy selections. We will be setting the standard: the most up-to-date and most tasteful selection of Latin and Tropical music in town. Period.
Live band once a month: the Salsa Caliente combo, led by Nick Duffield, will perform a live salsa jam once a month. Your weekly support will contribute to build the band's kitty and to get illustrious guest musicians to come to Cambridge on the monthly live night.
An inclusive dance class: never danced before? No problem. Come and be coached by the best dancers in town to make your first steps in Salsa, Bachata and/or Kizomba, with a rotation of teachers and styles. You will acquire enough basics to get started and to enjoy the night. If you can walk you can dance, and we know what we are talking about: two left feet welcome, we have had harder cases than you in the past and we have turned them into accomplished dancers. No partner needed, we will introduce you to new friends on the night.
Reasonable bar prices and a refreshing selection of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic cocktails. Because hey, it is still the weekend, and you want that extra pleasure on your taste buds, while quenching your dancing thirst without necessarily getting hammered. *So we have been working with the bar staff on tailoring the drinks menu to the needs of the Salsa people.*

We have followed his 4 hours bootcamp in Milton Keynes, and we can testify that this workshop is guaranteed to give you enough material to start dancing Kizomba, enjoying it and feeling confident on the dancefloor. DJ Sacha is the new kid on the block of the UK's local Cuban salsa DJs. His musical education started in France at an early age with piano, clarinet, saxophone and singing, all dropped when joining university in Paris and when the patience of suburban rehearsals was quickly overtaken by the urge to roam the wide wild world of the French capital's live concerts and second hand CD shops. His passion to discover all forms of musical cultures and their connection to people's lives was further deepened when travelling around the world in 2002 and 2003. A sudden encounter with a Manolito tune in 2004 marked the promised land: the sheer energy, musical completeness and fascinating traditions of Cuban salsa and Timba took the pole position of his eclectic musical charts.

After moving to the UK in 2007, and through an ongoing collaboration with Leandro Charanga, DJ Sacha has revived, developed and promoted the Cuban salsa scene in the region of Cambridge, and is helping with a number of Cuban salsa projects in East Anglia. Rather than pre-booked set meals, the participants will be able to choose their food from a special festival menu and to buy it directly from The Missing Sock on the day. The Missing Sock has kindly agreed to let people camp on their grounds for free on the Saturday night, provided they are prepared to cope with limited facilities and to behave decently. The restaurant's toilets will be accessible during normal opening hours (until 3am and from 7am; closed between 3am and 7am). No shower, sorry, BUT: I would definitely stay there only for the sake of getting one of The Missing Sock's fresh and delicious brekkies in the morning...

Coming from North, South or West of Cambridge From junction 14 of the M11 or Midlands, follow the A14 eastwards towards Cambridge, take junction 35 signposted B1102 Burwell and A1303 Newmarket/Cambridge. Take the exit onto the A1303 towards Newmarket, from the roundabout.

Coming from East of Cambridge Travelling west along the A14, turn off at junction 35 signposted for B1102 Burwell and A1303 Newmarket/Cambridge and take the exit A1303 to Newmarket.

Once on the A1303 the Missing Sock can be found on your left, just next to Albert Road

By Train

Cambridge is served by trains every half-hour from Kings Cross, London (journey time approximately 45-55 minutes) and from Liverpool Street, London (journey time approximately 1 hour). Trains from other parts of the country are also available by changing at Ely or Peterborough. There is a taxi rank outside the station and the journey to Stow-cum-Quy is around 15 minutes. Kizomba is taking the UK by storm this year, and is one of the fastest growing styles of dance and music in the country.

The word Kizomba means “to party” in one of Angola's national languages. Hypnotic beats, mellow moves, it is essentially Angolan by origin but is parallel to salsa in that it results from a cultural mix: African influences (Angolan Semba), colonial influences (Tango and Milonga imported by the Portuguese) and Zouk music (East Caribbean Islands – Guadeloupe, Martinique, Dominica, St Lucia, Haiti). If you like the sensuality of Dominican Bachata, multiply it by 10 and you get Kizomba.

We are very lucky to welcome HERNANI GABRIEL for this workshop in Cambridge. Hernani is one of the raising UK stars for Kizomba teaching, someone with a communicative enthusiasm, who does what he does because he deeply likes it.

Wow. We are getting Lazaro Lopez in Cambridge. You might have seen him dancing some mesmerizing rumbas on stage with Los Van Van or Manolito. You might have taken a brilliant rueda class with him in one of the UK's main Cuban salsa congresses, or in a major Cuban party in London. He is one of the most respected Cuban salsa teachers and performers in the UK, not least because he is also a babalao, a highly ranked persona in Cuba's Santeria religion. The following text has been contributed by Judith B. from Cambridge. So, guys, you thought salsa was for sissies, and you wanted to know what women think about dancing males... Just read further.

Men and Salsa

These few lines are addressed to you gentlemen and might change the way you think about salsa. I have taken the time to look for answers to that lingering interrogation, that same question which always comes back at the end of the night :

“Where were the salseros while so many pretty women were waiting by the side of the dance floor?”

Last month I bet with a mate about the outcome of a tennis match to try and start him up on salsa. For a month, if he was loosing he was bound to take salsa classes once a week, and if not I was bound to cook once a week. Even such a deal didn’t work… Yet my cooking is far from being bad!

There has always been more women than men at salsa parties, that is a fact. For some reason dancing is thought to be mostly a female thing, but don’t you believe it! One can be very male in the dance. In actual fact, there is nothing more macho than salsa since the man is leading, choosing the routines and deciding upon each step, and the woman is bound to follow. No way to escape a double turn even if her head already spins after the first one!

You will tell me that salsa is for sissies. Quite the opposite, it is a real sport: if you fully commit to it, it is a very good exercise, as tiresome as jogging in the park. Watch the six packs of long-term dancers, and you will understand what I mean. Plus, it comes with some added benefit: you will be able to meet scores of pretty ladies in a relaxed environment, and to dance tight and more if there's chemistry… Oooops, was I just rambling? Well, with a little bit of luck and boldness, between two dilequenos, a setenta complicado and a sacala, you might actually be able to whisper an invitation and find a partner to come with to the next salsa congress...

Thus why spending the night in front of a screen watching 11 blokes running after a ball, while you could be dancing all night long to hot and devilish rhythms, moving your body like a stud, meeting people and inviting pretty damsels who aren’t waiting for anything else… If after this you are still not convinced, come try a lesson with Leandro. Easyyyyy! Just dress casual, bring a pair of comfy shoes and join the rueda to the bewitching sounds of the Cuban salsa. You won’t regret it, guaranteed!
